CONSTITUTION

EMMANUEL BAPTIST CHURCH

ROUNDUP, MONTANA

ARTICLE 1 – NAME

This organization will be known as the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Roundup, Montana.

ARTICLE 2 – STATEMENT OF FAITH

We believe in the triune God of the Bible, who is eternally one God in three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe Jesus Christ is the only son of the living God.  As God’s Son, Jesus is fully God, and He is alive today as our Lord and Savior.

We believe the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Godhead, is fully God and lives in the life of every believer.  He guides us in our everyday lives, helps us understand the

Bible in a practical way and gives us joy, encouragement and comfort.

We believe the Bible is God’s only inspired record of His actions in History.  Today, it is the final written authority for our faith and for our everyday lives.  It is to be interpreted responsibly under the guidance of the Holy Spirit within the community of faith.

We believe that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and we believe Jesus died to save us from our sins.  Those who believe this and accept Christ as their savior are forgiven by God and enter into a new life.  That is what Baptists mean when we say we are born again.  Being born again does not make us perfect. It means we know God loves us and that He has forgiven us.

Being aware of the confusion of voices pertaining to human sexuality,

We believe that God’s intent for human sexual conduct as defined in scripture is faithful, lifelong heterosexual union for married persons and committed celibate behavior for unmarried persons.  We are in agreement with the Resolution on Human Sexuality adopted by ABC/NW, November 2003.  (Appendix 1)

We believe the church is a group of people who have freely gathered together because they share a common belief.  Christ is the head of each congregation, but every member is responsible to participate in governing its affairs.

ARTICLE 3 – MISSION

The mission of the Emmanuel Baptist Church is to promote the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and His kingdom.   We intend to nurture the whole Body of Christ, touching each person with His love.  As Christ’s love makes us whole, we commit ourselves to reach out with His Good News, so that all who desire might come into God’s Kingdom.

ARTICLE 4 – VISION

A Family of Believers, in Jesus Christ

Centered in His Love

Trusting in the Power of God

To Make a Difference

ARTICLE 5 – ASSOCIATION

Emmanuel Baptist Church of Roundup, Montana will be an affiliated member of the American Baptist Churches of the Northwest (ABC/NW)* and of the American Baptist Churches in the USA (ABC/USA)**.  As such this Church will participate in training and support programs, practice tithing of its income to American Baptist missions, and help promote the regional ministry of the ABC/NW.  This membership will be a voluntary, covenant relationship among likeminded congregations that remain legally autonomous while interdependent in mission.

ARTICLE 10 – ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

Purpose.  To create a desire for spiritual growth through which people are being changed, gifted, called, equipped and sent.  The role of the Pastor, Deacons, Executive Team and members will be kept distinct yet each person will be a vital part of the team.  Our unity as a team will not come from agreement on every detail, but from our shared experience of being in relationship with Jesus Christ.

Section 2.  Management. Management will be streamlined and the day to day maintenance, financial management, coordination and communication will be entrusted to a small group who are trained and trusted.  With this form of management, the “Mission” of the church can be carried out quickly and efficiently while the majority of the church can focus on the “Ministry” to which God has called them.  Our unity as a team will not come from agreement on every detail of doctrine or organizational form, but from the unity of our hearts as we share together the experience of being in relationship with Jesus Christ.  Control and permission giving will be decentralized, and many will be given permission and power to respond to God’s calling.  Individuals will be encouraged to discern, design, implement and evaluate the vision that makes the most of their gifts and calling.

Section 3. Roles.

a). The role of the Pastor is to lead the Church to accomplish its mission.

Appendix 3

AMERICAN BAPTIST
IDENTITY STATEMENT

We Are American Baptists

An Expression of Christian Faith Representative of American Baptists
adopted by the General Board, American Baptist Churches in the
U.S.A., November 2005

American Baptists worship the triune God of the Bible, who is eternally one God in three persons. This one, true God is most clearly revealed to us in the incarnate Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

American Baptists proclaim the Good News of the atoning death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, knowing that salvation (forgiveness of sins, release from guilt and condemnation, reconciliation with God) and eternal life are granted in grace to all who trust Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. This Gospel is the central message of the Bible.

American Baptists believe that the Bible, composed of the Old and New Testaments, is the divinely inspired Word of God, the final written authority and trustworthy for faith and practice. It is to be interpreted responsibly under the guidance of the Holy Spirit within the community of faith. The primary purpose of the Bible is to point to Jesus Christ, the living Lord of the Church.

Although Baptists have produced numerous confessions to express our common understandings of Christian faith, we hold the Scriptures, the Old and New Testaments, as our final authority. We accept no humanly devised confession or creed as binding.

American Baptists affirm that God is sovereign over all and that this sovereignty is expressed and realized through Jesus Christ. Therefore, we affirm the Lordship of Christ over the world and the church. We joyously confess that Jesus Christ is Savior and Lord. We are called in loyalty to Jesus Christ to proclaim the power of the Holy Spirit, the Good News of God’s reconciling grace, and to declare the saving power of the Gospel to every human being and to every human institution. We celebrate Christ’s charge to "make disciples of all nations" and to bear witness to God’s redeeming reign in human affairs.

American Baptists are summoned to this mission in common with all Christians. With the whole body of Christ, we also believe that God has been revealed in Jesus Christ as in no other, and that "God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself" (2 Corinthians 5:18). We anticipate the day when every creature and all creation, on earth and beyond, will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11).

God has given this particular community of believers called Baptists a distinctive history and experience. As we share in common with Christians everywhere, so Baptists everywhere celebrate a common heritage.

THEREFORE

With Baptist brothers and sisters around the world, we believe:

      • That the Bible is the final authority and trustworthy for faith and practice. It is to be interpreted responsibly under the guidance of God’s Holy Spirit within the community of faith;
      • That the Church is a gathered fellowship of regenerated believers, a sign of the coming universal reign of God;
      • That the freedom to respond to the Lordship of Christ in all circumstances is fundamental to the Christian gospel and to human dignity; and
      • That witness to Christ is the ongoing task of every Christian and of every church.
      • Within the larger Baptist family, American Baptists emphasize convictions which direct our special task and ministry.

We affirm that God through Jesus Christ calls us to be:

A Redeemed People

§         who claim a personal relationship to God through Jesus Christ;

§         who follow the Lord in believer’s baptism;

§         who gather as a believer’s church;

§         who share in the meal of the kingdom known as the Lord’s Supper;

§         who honor the priesthood of all believers; and

§         who live their faith as visible saints.

A Biblical People

§         who affirm the centrality of Scripture in our lives;

§         who pursue the study of God’s inspired Word as a mandate for faith and practice; and

§         who seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the understanding of Scripture, while respecting the common interpretation of Scripture within the community of believers.

§         Who submit to the teaching of Scripture that God`s design for sexual intimacy places it within the context of marriage between one man and one woman, and acknowledge that the practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Biblical teaching.

A Worshiping People

§         who gather regularly to praise God;

§         who receive nourishment by communion with the Risen Christ;

§         who share an open and public confession of faith; and

§         who believe that personal devotion brings vitality to corporate celebration.

A Mission People

§         who strive to fulfill the Great Commission to make disciples;

§         who invite persons to receive salvation and follow Christ;

§         who engage in educational, social, and health ministries;

§         who seek justice for all persons; and

§         who provide prayer and financial support to sustain a worldwide mission outreach.

An Interdependent People

§         who affirm the Church’s unity as given in Jesus Christ;

§         who gladly embody in our practice the ministry of the whole people of God;

§         who recognize God’s gifts for ministry and honor all offices of pastoral ministry;

§         who live and work together "in association"; and

§         who bring the free church tradition to cooperative and ecumenical Christianity.

A Caring People

§         who care for the needy, the weak, and the oppressed;

§         who care for the earth and for all its creatures.

An Inclusive People

§         who, gifted by a variety of backgrounds, find unity in diversity and diversity in unity;

§         who embrace a pluralism of race, ethnicity, and gender; and

§         who acknowledge that there are individual differences of conviction and theology.

A Contemporary People

§         who have a remembrance for the past and a vision for the future;

§         who are committed to religious liberty and to the separation of church and state;

§         who call our present world to make Jesus Christ Lord of all life; and

§         who trust the Holy Spirit for insight and power to live in the present age.

We further believe

      • That God has called us forth to such an hour as this;
      • That we live with a realizable hope;
      • That all things are held together in Christ;
      • That all creation will find its ultimate fulfillment in God;
      • That we shall see the One whose we are; and
      • That Jesus shall reign for ever and ever.

Appendix 1

American Baptist Churches of the Northwest
Resolution on Human Sexuality

(Adopted as Region Policy November 2003)

Because we are all wounded and broken people in need of the healing power of God’s grace in Christ Jesus, and being aware of the confusion of voices pertaining to human sexuality, the following statement defines our common understanding for sexual behavior.

 Because we affirm the Bible as our rule for faith and practice and embrace its ethic of compassion, love, and ministry to all persons and the availability of God’s grace through repentance (Luke 5:30-32, John 8:1-11, 1 Corinthians 6:11);

We affirm that God’s gracious creation intent for human sexual conduct as defined in scripture is faithful, lifelong heterosexual union for married persons and committed celibate behavior for unmarried persons. All other sexual practices are clearly defined as sinful and destructive of individuals, of community, and of the fellowship of believers, and like all sin, call for repentance, openness to the transforming power of God, and restoration to the community of faith. (Genesis 1:27, 2:24, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8, Hebrews 13:4); (Leviticus 18:22, 20:13, Romans 1:18-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

We affirm the existing Region policy “against violence of all kinds, including against persons of all sexual orientations.” (Policy adopted by the Regional Board, American Baptist Churches of the Northwest, October 30, 1998)

Therefore, we resolve that this Region will encourage grace-motivated ministries which respond to human need and offer God’s transforming love to all wounded and broken people, including heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, and transgendered persons.

Acknowledging the high calling of church and Region leadership, we resolve that this Region will not recognize for ordination or recognize the preexisting license or ordination of any person practicing, affirming, endorsing, and/or celebrating adultery, fornication, gay/lesbian/bisexual behavior, or any other practices that are contrary to God’s creation intent as defined above.

And finally, because of our commitment to do mission together, we resolve that any

church within this Region that endorses, celebrates, or affirms adultery, fornication, gay/lesbian/bisexual behavior, is choosing not to cooperate in the work and mission of the ABCNW. That church will be indicating their choice to sever their relationship with the ABC of the Northwest (Article 3 Section 3, 3.2(a)).

Guiding principles for Emmanuel Baptist church

            Emmanuel Baptist Church will be guided by the Vision and Mission that God has given, and governed by the following Boundary Principles.  These principles will be requirements for the leadership of the church, and they will be the expectations or goals for all persons in the church community.

VISION:

A Family of Believers in Jesus Christ

Centered in His Love

Trusting in the Power of God

To Make a Difference

MISSION:

            The Mission of Emmanuel Baptist Church is to promote the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and His Kingdom.  We intend to nurture the whole body of Christ, touching each person with His love.  As Christ’s love makes us whole, we commit ourselves to reach out with His Good News, so that all who desire might come into God’s Kingdom.

BOUNDARY PRINCIPLES:

1.  With regard to teaching, leadership, and membership of the church, all leaders will uphold high standards of biblical teachings and morality.

2.  Under the teaching and guidance of the pastor, the leadership will continually seek the wisdom and leading of Christ as the Lord of the church.  To this end, significant attention will be given to prayer and study of Scripture as a group.

3.  Those in positions of leadership and ministry will be selected based upon their God given gifts and abilities.  As these leaders are selected, every effort possible will be made to encourage these gifts and abilities through appropriate training and support.

4.  No one will cause or allow any practice, activity, decision, or organizational circumstance that is unbiblical, unlawful, imprudent, unethical, or that is not supportive of the mission, vision, and Rules of Procedure of the church.

5.  Organizations and individuals who wish to use the church facilities and services for meeting space and/or for promotional use will present their project for approval to the leadership team before the program is presented.

6.  Financial planning including budgets, spending, and investments will be based upon our vision, mission, and the objectives of the leadership team and will not risk financial jeopardy for the future of the church.

7.  Practical and financial decisions regarding the church’s activities and direction will be made with the understanding that God asks us to take risks and attempt things that are above our human effort to accomplish.

8.  Those in leadership positions will not cause or allow conditions, procedures, or decisions that are unfair, unsafe, undignified, unnecessarily intrusive, or that fail to provide appropriate confidentiality or privacy.

9.  With respect to employment, compensation, and benefits to employees, the church will not allow jeopardy to fiscal integrity or public image.

10.  All leaders will be expected to communicate and participate with one another in a team spirit, with the understanding that the confidentiality and privacy boundaries listed in #8 above will be honored.  (There will be no Lone Rangers in the leadership.)  Leader meetings will be conducted according to the rules described in Article 18 of the Rules of Procedure.

11.  The leadership will collect input and feedback from members, attendees, and guests to better understand their needs.  This information will be shared and processed in the appropriate leadership meetings.  It is the responsibility of any and all leaders to keep the congregation informed regarding the work and activities of the church through appropriate reports, minutes from meetings, the newsletter, quarterly town hall meetings, etc.

12.  As we consider boundaries, we will operate with the understanding that there are no boundaries to where the Good News of Jesus Christ is taken.  We are committed to sharing this Good News wherever and with whomever God reveals to us.

13.  As an affiliated member of the Northwest Region of American Baptist Churches of the USA, Emmanuel Baptist Church will utilize the resources of the Region as needed and in turn give support for the region in an appropriate manner.

14.  All the above boundary principles will be adhered to with a Biblical perspective and understanding of God’s Grace and forgiveness.  Where failure occurs, provision will be made for confession, repentance, forgiveness by God and fellow Christians, and restoration.
